Test Summary

This document details the test of JPL’s mirror site located at the Small Bodies node at the University of Maryland, College Park. This occurred at the Small Bodies Node on June 13th and 29th, 2006, and was completed by Andrew Ducore. The test involved both the standby and operation modes of the mirror site as well as switching between the two modes. Minor configuration issues were encountered during the tests, and these issues were subsequently corrected and regression tests were performed. The regression tests were successful and the mirror site is ready for operations.

Standby Mode

Testing the standby mode of the mirror site occurred on June 13th and involved directing a web browser to a number of URLs served by the mirror site machines mirpds.astro.umd.edu and mirbrite.astro.umd.edu. Once the pages were loaded their content was compared against examples in the test plan, and a number of links to different areas of the website were tested. Instructions were taken from the Planetary Data System Mirror Site Standby Mode Test Procedures Version 0.060416.

Cross-server linking

The instructions differed from practice in that some links to be tested in the instructions point to the live page (served from starbrite.jpl.nasa.gov) rather than the mirror server (mirbrite.astro.umd.edu) as was intended. Manually directing the browser to the correct URL resolved this issue. Since when the mirror site is in operation mode the URLs given will be correct in pointing to the nasa.gov domain names, which will direct traffic to the mirror machines on the astro.umd.edu network, this issue is not significant. This issue came up in steps 2.2, 3.1, 3.2, 3.3, 3.4, and 3.5.

Basic Browser

Testing the basic failed due to a firewall configuration problem. Communication between the product servers running on the various PDS nodes and the mirror server mirbrite.astro.umd.edu was blocked. Once the networks were configured to allow this traffic the basic browser functioned normally. This issue came up in step 3.1.

Operation Mode

Testing the operation mode of the mirror site occurred on June 29th and involved the same tests in the standby mode test, except that the pages to be tested were accessed through the *.nasa.gov domain names rather than the *.astro.umd.edu domain names. Care was first taken to ensure that the DNS servers translated the *.nasa.gov domain names to be mirrored into the names of the mirror machines on the astro.umd.edu network.

Engineering

The page https://pds-engineering.jpl.nasa.gov/ linked to by the Engineering link on the PDS main page failed. Permissions to the database were being blocked from the IP address 128.8.235.16 (mirpds.astro.umd.edu). Once permission to access the postgre SQL server was granted for the mirror machines mirpds.astro.umd.edu and mirbrite.astro.umd.edu, the page loaded correctly. This issue came up in step 4.5.

Operating Procedures

Testing the operating procedures of the mirror site occurred on June 13th and again on June 29th and involved checking availability of the websites through the *.astro.umd.edu domain names as well as logging into the two machines and checking the status of various files and processes.

Steps marked JPL on the right were performed by JPL staff and not by the SBN staff performing the test. Steps marked n/a contained no testable content.

Permissions

On mirpds.astro.umd.edu and mirbrite.astro.umd.edu, access to certain directories to be tested was blocked for the given test user account. This arose on the June 13th test and was fixed by the June 29th test. This issue came up in step 2.1.2.
