Planetary Data System Standards Teleconference
December 10, 2008 9-11 AM
Announcements:
Standards DB still down
- PDS EN SA working on problem.
Phoenix / MSL Keywords
- Fairly urgent keyword review will be coming soon
- Not everyone is going to want to review ~225 keywords. According to Standards Process, the approval of a majority of those eligible to vote is required to approve an SCR. Using this scenario, an "abstain" vote is essentially a "no" vote. How to proceed?
- Several members of the group objected to having to review the keywords on the schedule proposed, but did not wish to relinquish their right to review the keywords. It was argued that the MSL mission needs to provide a more reasonable schedule for the review and approval of the keywords. (The Phoenix mission does not intend to reprocess data from their first release based on an approval or disapproval of their keywords; however the second and third releases may be fixed in response to PDS action.)
PDF version of PSDD
- PSDD version 1r72 has been released. PDF version available online is 1r70; Elizabeth will try to get update out soon.
Telecon Discussions:
1. SCR status:
- SCR3-1126: Multiple occurences of the same keyword in an object - Valid or Not?
WG: T. King (lead), M. Cayanan, L. Huber, S. Hughes, D. Simpson
- Version 7 has been distributed for review.
- E-vote delayed due to problems with database.
- A telecon vote was held with the results shown in the table below. Since the vote on sending the SCR to the MC was tied, a suggestion was made to err on the side of providing review by sending it to the MC. (The Standards Coordinator concurred.)

- SCR3-1147: SOURCE_PRODUCT_START/STOP_TIME
WG: S. Slavney (lead), ?, ?
- Version 1 of SCR distributed for review.
- Some nodes would like more opportunity to review the SCR before voting. E. Rye will send out for a vote at the end of this week.
2. Further Issues:
- Blu-Ray as data transfer / archive media format
- Lyle has a data provider who intends to deliver data only on BD-ROM. Needs advice on the use of this format.
- Since the media is only being used for data transfer and not archive, the decision on what to use is up to the data provider and the discipline node. Given that ATM would have to purchase a reader and writer (since they send copies of the data to Rings), and that Rings would also have to purchase a reader, Lyle has decided to have the data sent on a data brick instead.
- The SE team at EN will take another look at this media.
Next telecon scheduled for 2009-01-14.
